Know The Drill: Our Favourite Dental Treatments To Keep Your Teeth Sparkling

When it comes to going to the dentist, most people visit for a yearly check up at most. This will involve the dentist checking your teeth and gums. But there’s so much more to dentistry than a basic scale and polish. Cosmetic dentistry has progressed leaps and bounds over the past few years, and there are hundreds of specialist beauty procedures which will give you a Hollywood smile to be proud of. Here are some of our favourites.

Teeth whitening
Teeth whitening is perhaps the most commonly used form of cosmetic dentistry. Coffee drinkers and smokers tend to have issues with their teeth yellowing over the years. However, these aren’t the only people to suffer. The dulling and yellowing of teeth is part and package of the relentlessly unforgiving ageing process. From your teenage years onwards, your teeth will gradually grow less and less white. Cosmetic whitening solves these problems. The cheapest method of teeth whitening is home kits. These are usually strips that you place across your teeth yourself. However, you do get what you pay for, and this is typically the least effective form of whitening. Professionals are trained to create specialist moulds and use lasers to make your teeth true pearly whites.

Teeth Straightening
When it comes to straightening teeth, the longest established and most commonly used method is dental braces. An orthodontist will fit a metal brace into the client’s mouth. Over time, the wires in the brace are tightened and will gradually pull teeth into the desired position. Braces are usually fitted in children and teens. So if you don’t want a mouthful of metal as an adult, there are other options, such as cosmetic teeth straightening. This process involves the patient receiving a local anaesthetic. The dentist will then use an electrosurge unit to reshape the patient’s gum. Teeth will be drilled, and veneers will be fitted on top in the desired position. If none of this appeals to you, there are new dental braces which are practically invisible to the eye; invisalign uses removable braces or clear aligners to gradually straighten your teeth over the period of 9-18 months.

Veneers
Veneers are thin layers of porcelain that are specially made to fit over the surface of a patient’s tooth. They improve the visible appearance of your teeth. From colour, to shape and position. They are often used to correct tooth discoloration or repair small chips to the front of a tooth. They are thin and bonded with a strong adhesive, so your teeth will need little preparation before it is fitted. If looked after properly, they can last for years. Which means fewer visits back to the dentist to keep on top of your beautiful smile.

Tooth jewellery
If you want your smile to catch attention, tooth jewelry is a great option. This is where a dentist will apply a small gem or stone to the tooth you desire to decorate. They will use dental cement to fix the jewel to your tooth. This can easily be removed if you decide it is not for you. It is important to ensure that you keep on top of your dental hygiene if you have one of these. They provide an area for bacteria to build up around, so it is important to clean your teeth at least twice a day to prevent the tooth decaying.
